Sculpture by Esteylin
Esteylin Ramón Betanco Calderón,
Estelí, Nicaragua
It is known that in the rugged extremities of
northwest Nicaragua local artisans have worked the local volcanic rocks with
hammers and chisels since 1972 when ‘Marmolina’ was discovered near San Juan de Limay. Although many are dedicated to the sculpting of this stone, only a few
have evolved to the level of artist. Latino Arts searched high and low for that
artist who dared to express the passion for humanity in its most basic element.
After nearly two years of searching for the artistry that would match the beauty
of the stone, we are proud to present the works of
Esteylin Ramón Betanco Calderón.
From the initial discovery of
this beautiful stone, Esteylin’s parents have worked the bulky hand dug pieces
from small quarries near Esteli. At the age of 8, he began to assist his
parents in the polishing of their creations. Little by little he acquired a
working knowledge of the stone and in a short period of time began to create his
own works. His creativity flourished from an early age and his skills became
recognized throughout Central America.
Today, Esteylin continues to work from a
primitive studio located behind his home in rural Nicaragua. All creations are
done without the benefit of electrical tools! Currently, he dedicates nearly
all of his time to selecting and mining the raw materials, sculpting and
traveling to expositions throughout Central America. He is assisted at home and
abroad by his wife Lillian.
